VERY much attached to his long locks a Drymen man is nevertheless getting ready to lose them for a very good cause.
With his hair already down to his shoulders 24-year-old Andy Macpherson also opted for the dreadlock look while travelling the world recently, writes Gregor White.
But while this was good enough for his time in the Far East, New Zealand and India he’s been getting a bit of stick for it since returning home around two months ago.
The local minister’s son who now works behind the bar in the village’s Winnock Hotel said: “My dad has been on at me to get it cut and they actually started a petition in the hotel to get me to shave my head!
“I’m quite attached to it though and decided if it was going to go then it would have to be for a good cause.”
When the Haiti earthquake struck he said it was a “no-brainer” and that was an cause more than worth sacrificing something for. Andy is set to go under the razor at the Winnock Hotel tonight (Friday).
“I reckon it’s about four years since I last had my hair cut so it’s going to be weird and probably really cold as well – if I wish one thing it’s that I come back to Scotland when it was a bit warmer!” he said.
“I am a bit nervous about it but also curious to see what it’s like, though if I can get away with it I will probably grow it all back again.”
Andy isn’t going it alone tomorrow as he will be joined in the barber’s chair by fellow long-haired colleagues John Stewart and Tom Reid who are also willing to put their locks on the line.
Numerous others will be submitting themselves for chest and leg waxing and with live music from the band Them Ocajional, to help things go with a swing. Members of the public are welcome to come along and join in the fun from 8pm.
So far the Winnock’s efforts have raised £600 though it is hoped this can be doubled on the evening.
