Potholes instead of Makars

Dear Editor – The suggestion to axe the post of makar has obviously caused conflict within Stirling Council. However, whether one agrees with the SNP’s assertion that it’s a penny-pinching attack on Stirling’s art and culture scene or a luxury we can’t afford in a period of austerity, as seen by others, there is little doubt that many readers will be able to identify better uses for taxpayers’ money, which is spent on largely symbolic projects.Read

The worst side of human nature

Dear Editor – The current machinations within Stirling Council remind me of the Burns poem ‘Such a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation’. While Burns reflected his view that the Scots of the day sold out to English gold, the title surely applies to the wheeling and dealing that has manifested itself since the local elections.Read

St Thomas’ cemetery not a place to walk dogs

Dear Editor – My family and I visit St Thomas’ Cemetery to pay our respects to our sadly departed loved ones. However, we are frequently disgusted and disappointed to see it being used by people we presume to be local residents as an exercise yard for their dogs.Read

Labour and Tories – a marriage of convenience

Dear Editor – What is the point of people taking the trouble to go out and vote if their votes are to be treated with contempt? On May 3 the people of the Stirling Council area elected a majority of SNP councillors and it beggars belief that both the Labour and Conservative parties should deliberately ignore that result and jump into the political bed together to prevent the SNP from forming an administration.Read

Good fortune at the expense of many

Dear Editor – Re “Turbine Campaign is Getting Personal” (Stirling Observer, April 27), the claim to victimhood at the hands of objectors, promulgated by those whose farmland is destined to form the larger part of the site for a proposed windfarm, would call forth more sympathy if they had been less coy about the likely benefits accruing to themselves as a result of their consent.Read

Voters will not be fooled by Anti-Labour rant

Dear Editor – I’m constantly amazed by the apparent selective memory and ignorance of the facts of local SNP politicians. The latest offering by Scott Farmer is an anti-Labour rant and an attempt at a smear campaign over the council budget.Read
