Sir, – Stirling Council has with great secrecy managed to plan and carry out the destruction of mature trees on the perimeter of Kings Park. Wanton destruction and environmental scarring come to mind, all in the pursuit of motorists and the council's penchant for finding avenues for income generation by stealth. Try to have a mature tree removed from your own property and see how quickly the council reacts.

Sir, – If your lead report “Council to chop down 20 trees in Kings Park” had been published on April 1 one would have assumed it to be an ill-conceived joke – but this is real and it is a piece of municipal vandalism.

Sir, – The Stirling Observer edition of October 8 included a special feature on alcohol awareness. It was backed by no fewer than 14 producers and distributors of alcoholic drink, all of whom have a vested interest in preventing forthcoming public regulation. Among notable absentees was Alcoholics Anonymous.

Sir – I read with some concern the article by Kaiya Marjoribanks entitled "Council officers must get permission before spying" (Observer, September 24). It would appear to me that Councillor Neil Benny is seriously misguided over this issue.
