STIRLING is poised to have its first poet in residence appointed.
Stirling Council’s provost panel agreed on Monday to support plans for the position of a makar, who would receive a retaining fee of £500 each year for the position.
The makar would be appointed after nominations which would be handled by the provost’s office.
As part of the job, it is thought the makar would contribute a piece to be published on the council website each month and also in the Stirling Observer.
The poet would also be asked to contribute to events, such as the successful Off the Page festival and also carry out work at local schools.
Consideration for the post is also to be given to Gaelic, Scots and Lallans speakers, although this will be dropped if this is too restrictive for possible nominees.
The idea of a makar for Stirling, which would place the city in line with other parts of Scotland, came from representatives of the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.
