New chapter in Killearn story

FAMILY ties made one Killearn woman an obvious choice when it came to updating the village history.

Fiona Glass’s mother was one of two authors behind the first “Parish of Killearn” study, published in 1972.

“I had never done anything like it before and probably won’t again – I almost had to have a gun put to my head to do it,” said Fiona.

“I only just scraped through my Higher English.”

A lifelong resident of Killearn, however, she eventually agreed to head the project with fellow villager Jim Fallas.

Several other individuals and community groups contributed pieces for the book, which was last updated in 1988.

Fiona said: “Obviously things like the history and geology of the area haven’t changed from edition to edition but there is other content that is new, even including about the houses in the village.

“It was a very steep learning curve for me and I’m just grateful for all the support from the other writers, as well as a few other people within the village who work in publishing and so on and were very, very helpful from that side of things”.

With production funded by the Killearn Trust “The Parish of Killearn”, priced £20, is available to buy in most village shops.
