MEMBERS of the public, police officers and staff were honoured at Central Scotland Police’s annual awards ceremony earlier this week.
More than 40 people had their achievements recognised at the ceremony at Central Scotland Police’s HQ in Stirling on Tuesday evening.
Among those receiving awards was Robert Burns (45), of Aberfoyle, who received the Royal Humane Society Award for bravery.
Robert helped rescue a woman from a house fire in the village last year. Sadly, the woman later died. However, Robert’s bravery did not go unnoticed and he was presented with his award in recognition of his selfless actions.
Sergeant Joyce Greenhorn received the Chief Constable’s Certificate of Merit for leading the six-month long Operation Ironworks. This targeted anti-social behaviour in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
Stirling Constables Victoria Parsons and Gavin McDevitt each received the Certificate of Merit for their outstanding actions in rescuing a distressed young woman from a bridge in the Stirling area back in July.
Commendation certificates were also issued to Sergeant Kenneth McAndrew and Constables Una Hunter, Hazel Hall and Michael Graham for their alert response and bravery when they confronted and arrested a man who was brandishing a samurai sword in Alloa in October 2007.
Chief Constable Kevin Smith said: “These officers are to be commended as they tackled a man who presented a serious threat to public safety. They kept their cool in a difficult and frightening situation which they managed to resolve without anybody being hurt.”
Thirteen officers of various ranks were also presented with long service and good conduct medals. Five police staff members received awards for 22 years service and a further one was presented with an award for 25 years service.
Two members of the public were recognised for their public -spirited actions.
Other accolades included the Thomson Trophy, Federation Cup for Effort, Central Scotland Police Merit Award, and Citizens Band Radio for the Blind Trophy, Convener’s Trophy, and The McCrae Award for Endeavour and the Retired Police Officer’s Association Trophy.
Mr Smith added: “It is important to recognise the work that officers carry out often in difficult circumstances. It is also equally as important to mark the achievements officers make during the course of their career.”
