Pupils products on show

THE DESIGN skills of two pupils from the Stirling area have been put on show in Glasgow.

Product design pupils Lauren Hunter of Balfron High School and David Rae of Bannockburn High School are having their work showcased as part of a unique exhibition at the Glasgow School of Art.

The exhibition organised by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) in partnership with the Glasgow School of Art shows some of the exceptional design assignments submitted for the 2009 Intermediate 2 Product Design Course.

As part of the course assessment, SQA issues a different design assignment task each year.

In 2009 - the centenary year for the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Building - candidates were asked to design street furniture for the area surrounding the iconic Glasgow School of Art building.

Lauren and David’s works are two of the 10 designs on display in the exhibition and were among the very best submitted.

Lauren (16) designed a litter bin using galvanised steel for the outer shell.

Lauren is studying Higher Product Design this year and is interested in studying either international product design or fashion at a university or school of art.

David, also 16, designed a litter bin with three separate compartments.

He is studying Higher Product Design this year and when he finishes school plans to study sports development and coaching at college. He would like to become a football coach.

Director of the Glasgow School of Art, Professor Seona Reid, said: “The students’ approaches to the brief have been thoughtful, detailed and ambitious. They have clearly considered function, form and material, and brought a spirit of invention to their ideas.”

The exhibition opened last week and will run until Tuesday. Schools and colleges visiting the Exhibition can book tours of the Mackintosh building at a discounted price.
