Elderly urged to be on alert to guard against bogus callers

THREE elderly people have been the victims of theft in rural Stirlingshire within the last month.

Community constable Campbell Dunn said the cases happened at homes in Blanefield and Killearn.

All three incidents were the result of crooks turning up unannounced.

He said: “While the public can be assured that we will do everything they can to prevent and detect this type of crime, it is important residents take simple precautions to safeguard themselves and their neighbours.”

He urged householders to make use of security chains and peep holes and not to be duped by any deals offered by unsolicited visitors – however tempting their sales pitch might seem.

PC Dunn added: “People should not be tempted out of their house to look for or at something, as someone else may sneak in when their attention is distracted.

“I would also ask people to please look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours. If anyone sees someone unusual or suspicious calling on neighbours, they should make it their business to check and see what’s going on. If in doubt call the police.”

Police can be contacted on 01786 456000 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
