Engaging in class politics

KILLEARN Primary School P7 pupils pupils recently visited Stirling Council as part of their Scottish and European politics study, through a new initiative by a Scottish Government outreach programme.

Loch member Councillor Colin O’Brien was questioned by the students on the many local and national issues they had been learning about. He also explained the purpose of the council chambers and its many functions and uses.

The youngsters also met Provost Fergus Wood who told them all about his civic duties, Stirling’s history and council crest. He also emphasised the importance of the rural communities and villages to Stirling Council.

Teacher Fiona Hornbuckle said: “As part of their project they have already held a mini election and learned about devolution and children’s rights. They have also been following political events in the media and looking at how broadsheets and tabloids report.”
