YOBS ATTACK ISLAM CENTRE

POLICE have begun patrolling local places of worship and businesses in response to the terrorist attacks in London.

Although no specific information has been received about a threat to the area, officers are conducting the patrols in a bid to reassure the public.

Despite the patrols the city’s Islamic Centre has again been subject to attacks of vandalism despite pleas for local youths to be more tolerant.

The Burghmuir Road centre has had numerous windows smashed in recent weeks including another last Saturday night shortly before 11pm.

The Islamic Centre’s head, Imam Arif, told the Stirling Observer a fortnight ago that Muslims in the city deplored the terrorism in London and said the extremists who carried out the July 7 attacks did not represent the teachings of Islam.

He called on local youths to be more understanding and to refrain from vandalising the centre.

A spokesperson for Central Scotland Police said that all criminality against ethnic groups in the city would be thoroughly investigated.

She said: “Officers are carrying out patrols at places of worship and business. The purpose is to provide reassurance, engage with members of the community and deter criminal behaviour.

“There currently is no indication of heightened tensions in Central Scotland.

“We reassure minority ethnic communities that any incident of criminality will be thoroughly and professionally investigated.

“The force is involved in working with lay advisors, community leaders, the Central Scotland Racial Equality Council and RAHMAS.

“We would encourage people to report any incidents of criminality.

“While we have no specific information about a threat to Central Scotland, people should remain alert at all times although they should not be alarmed.”

If you have any information about the vandalism at the Islamic Centre contact Central Scotland Police in confidence on (01786) 456000 or call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
