Tennis: Livilands celebrate a century of tennis

THIS year sees the centenary of Livilands Tennis Club which was formed in 1909 and played on courts at Livilands Gate, the site of which is now occupied by the main car park of Stirling Royal Infirmary.

The club moved to its current location in 1976 and in 1997 replaced the courts with three all-weather floodlit courts.

On Sunday 16 couples from both Livilands and a number of other clubs within Central area took part in a tournament as part of the club’s centenary celebrations.

Players and spectators alike enjoyed the warm sunny weather as the round-robin stages were completed with pairs representing Bridge of Allan, Killearn, Stirling and the home club reaching the semi-final stage.

In the first of the semis, Dave Gilvear and Carol Curtis from Bridge of Allan won a hard-hiting contest with Tom Cunningham and Nicola Illingworth from Stirling.

The second semi saw Livilands pair Graham Melville and Anne Coyne prove too strong for the Killearn pairing of Chris Jewel and Karen McColl.

In the final Graham and Anne started strongly and, despite a determined effort from Dave and Carol , it was the home pairing who emerged as champions.
