LAKE OF MENTEITH

THE trout season finished on the first Sunday in November with the fundraising day for the Port Kirk and Primary School.

Despite the atrocious conditions, 26 boats went out. When fishing, BBQ and raffle totals were added up a grand total of £1800 was raised (after costs) and this sum will be split two-thirds to the primary school and a third to Port Kirk. A special thanks to all those in attendance and there were a few fish caught as well!

Also many thanks to Tam Ward, Alan Hill, James Litster, John Buchanan, The Lake Hotel, Forth Inn, Rob Roy, Lion and Unicorn, Stirling Angling Centre, Baynes Fishing Tackle, Scottish Woollen Centre Aberfoyle, Callander Golf Course, Go Ape Aberfoyle, McLaren Leisure Centre, David Marshall Lodge, Rednock Riding Centre, Co-op and also to those who donated the numerous other prizes.

Pike angling this autumn was again notable for the large number of small pike taken – 353 on the first pike day. The biggest fish of the three days was this 28lb 8oz fish taken by Jim Morrice (a new personal best) when he decided to try out a bull dawg lure. One of the pike days was a collection day in which the PAC/PAAS raised money (£372) for an emergency rescue system for Loch Awe, and they have now have raised £872 in total.

The Lake is now closed for trout and pike fishing for the winter. The season will re-open for trout anglers on Saturday, March 20, 2010.

SWANSWATER

FISHING early in the week was excellent and, although it tailed off a little, there were still plenty landed by the weekend. There are no particular hot spots at present with fish being taken all round the main pond. Fish were still in the top two or three feet for most of the week and were taking small lures, nymphs and wet flies.

Favourite patterns included Yellow Dancer, Damsel, Nomad, Montana, Blob, Buzzer, Gold Head Daddy, and Diawl Bach. Best colours were Green, Black and Orange.
