ANOTHER thumping 37-shot victory at the weekend firmly established Stirling County West bowlers at the top of their west qualifying section of the Scottish Counties championship.
Following a similar opening success the previous week against Argyll & Bute, it was a confident County squad that headed for the Dear Green Place on Saturday to take on Glasgow at the Kelvindale green.
And it didn’t take them long to show their intentions going into a 12-shot lead after five ends (38-26) and holding that advantage for most of the match – apart from one brief spell around the halfway mark when the scores got worryingly close.
However a determined County West once again stepped on the gas and opened up an 11-shot advantage by the 15th end.
Over the final three ends they blew away their opponents carding 33 shots for the loss of just seven to run out comfortable winners with four winning rinks.
Charlie Gibson, Steve Whitton, Craig Watson and Jason Williams won 27-12 against Jim Lyness, while Terry Reilly, Joe Traynor, Dougie Kerr and Bryan Stillie romped to a 32-8 win over Graham Darcy.
Paul Monteith, Harvey Robertson, Kevan Frogley and Danny McCormick finished 25-11 ahead of Dougie Smith, with Ian Forsyth, Ian Gillies, Rae Duncan and Derek Logie 28-14 winners over Peter Murray.
Elsewhere, Richard Guy, Manny Cruz, Billy Guy and Hugh Letford lost 10-22 to Ricky Taylor, while David Stewart, Tommy Hood, Peter Black and Sandy Deans suffered a 16-34 defeat at the hands of Archie Glencross. Totals: Stirling County West 138, Glasgow 101.
The man of the match award went to Jason Williams.
Stirling County West return to home ground this Saturday when they take on Renfrewshire West at the Cambusbarron green at 2pm.
With two rounds of Hamilton Trophy matches now complete, three teams are undefeated – Stirling County West, Ayrshire and Clackmannan & Kinross.
For Saturday’s match at Cambusbarron, Sandy Deans’ rink will comprise David Stewart, Peter Black and Pat Martin, while Danny McCormick’s rink comprises James Brown, Harvey Robertson and Kevan Frogley. All other rinks remain intact. Reserves are Tommy Hood and Arron Hazel.
Players to report at 1.15pm.
