STIRLING County West’s slim Hamilton Trophy hopes are still alive following last Saturday’s 23-shot victory over Argyll and Bute.
The hard-earned win on a rain-soaked Bogleha green in Dunoon leaves County West needing two more victories but also requiring both section rivals Ayrshire and Renfrewshire to drop points. County have still to play the latter in their final match.
County gave a very good performance on Saturday in a match played in incessant rain. Underfoot conditions became so dangerous with only a few ends remaining that the match had to be halted for 30 minutes.
On resumption a determined County West, who had led right from the start, ended strongly and finished with three winning rinks.
Garry Brown, Steve Whitton, Pat Martin and Sandy Deans won 21-16 against Craig Bence, while Manny Cruz, Duncan Angus, Gary Malcolmson and Danny McCormick won 22-18 over John McLean.
On top form was the rink comprising Aaron Hazel, Rae Duncan, Billy Guy and Jason Williams who romped to a magnificent 35-11 victory over N Arden.
Losing out were James Brown, Ian Gillies, Craig Watson and Dougie Kerr, who finished 13-21 adrift of Ian Bence, while Lee Neilson, David Ferguson, Peter Black and David Stewart were pipped 20-21 by Andy Scott.
Also losing narrowly were Charlie Gibson, Ian Forsyth, Willie Black and Derek Logie, who went down 24-25 to Stevie Scott. Totals: Stirling County West 135, Argyll and Bute 112.
The same team has been named for Saturday’s penultimate West section encounter against Glasgow West at Dunblane.
DESPITE notching up a fine 21-shot victory on Sunday, Stirlingshire Under-25s were denied a place in the semi-finals of the Scottish Under-25s League.
The win against Dumbartonshire on the Denny green sadly proved insufficient as West Lothian’s four-shot victory over Renfrewshire saw them progress in the competition by just three shots.
AIRTHREY Spa bowlers were visitors to Spittalmyre green last Saturday – and won by eight shots.
Scores (Spittalmyre skips first): J Monaghan 10, I Watt 15; H Houston 9, K Collier 12; J Phimister 12, I MacFarlane 15; J Milne 13, E Morgan 10. Totals: Spittalmyre 44, Airthrey Spa 52.
