Well done Airdrie

AT a time when the main focus is always on the top level of our game, I would like to congratulate Airdrie United on their Alba Cup success at the weekend.

I know the majority of punters don’t really give much time to what is going on in the lower leagues, but they should be recognised whenever they have a positive input.

More than 4,000 fans – that’s more than there were at the Inverness v Hearts game I watched on Saturday – turned out at McDiarmid Park to see this year’s final between Ross County and Airdrie.

This game had just about everything you could want from a football match – passion, skill and lots of endeavour. There were two own goals, two late equalisers and a sudden death penalty shoot out as part of the afternoon’s entertainment.

At the end, it was the Airdrie players who lifted the trophy as the fans celebrated for the first time in many years. The most pleasing aspect from my point of view, was that there were a few young players on show being given the opportunity to gain more experience and improve their chances of progressing their careers.
