BRAEHEAD entered the Templeton Cup for the first time and unfortunately fell at the first hurdle against Fife side, Lauders.
Braehead made the more promising start and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 10 minutes. A Lauder defender handled in the box and Stuart Alexander stoked home the penalty.
However, the game was turned on its head five minutes later when Lee Statter was adjudged to have brought down a Lauder attacker in the box and as he was the last man he was sent from the field of play. Lauders scored from the resulting penalty.
For the remainder of the first half Braehead gave as good as they got but slack defending five minutes from half time allowed Lauders to take the lead.
Braehead’s task was made harder minutes into the second half when a fine strike from a Lauders midfielder made it 3-1.
Braehead made changes and Thomas Gardner pulled a goal back. Braehead scorned several opportunities to equalise.
They were made to pay on 75 minutes when another fine strike from a Lauders attacker made it 4-2. Braehead continues to plug away but with minutes remaining they were caught on the counter attack and Lauders rounded off their fine day by making it 5-2.
Braehead thank John Gilvear and Sons, Livestock Agency for their sponsorship of the match ball. This Sunday Braehead are involved in an away fixture against Falcon. Kick off 2pm.
CASTLEVIEW 1
FALCON 1
BOTH teams shared the points in this bad tempered league game.
Falcon started well and could have gone a goal up on 20 minutes but the Castleview keeper saved well from Ryan Seath. Five minutes later Falcon took the lead through Kevin McGuigan. Ryan Seath was denied again before the interval by an in-form goalkeeper.
In the second half Castleview started well and evened the score with a well worked goal. Despite having a couple more good chances, Falcon failed to score again.
Best for Falcon: Liam Spence, Gregg McCormack, Steven Hill.
Falcon are at home to Braehead this Sunday 2pm kick-off.
ST NINIANS BORESTONE1
BRUCEHILL 1
(Brucehill won on penalties aet)
THIS ding-dong cup tie saw both sides give their all and it took 120 minutes of play and penalties before the visitors from Dumbarton progressed into round two of the Templeton Trophy.
Borestone opened up brightly and went in front following neat work and a lovely strike from Janek Kanikula, Brucehill drew level before the break with a well worked free kick.
The second half saw chances at both ends but the keepers were on top form and it was into extra time. This was once again a stalemate and it was down to penalties, with the visitors winning the day.
