Bannockburn go top of the league

BANNOCKBURN 2

GIFFNOCK 0

BANNOCKBURN moved back to the top of the league on Saturday with a hard fought victory.

The visitors were first to show when G Maitland had to be alert to pull off a great save, but on 20 minutes the home side took the lead when they were awarded a penalty after Donaldson was brought down in the box, Traynor duly converted.

On 42 minutes the home side made it 2-0 when a long ball out of defence by the visitors was met by D Todd and his clearing header from inside his own half fully 55 yards, eluded the keeper, who had one eye on the advancing Bell, and the bounce took it over his head.

Both sides had chances in the second half and with Maitland pulling off arguably his best save of the game from a 25 yard free kick.

Bannockburn are at home on Saturday v Harestanes in the West of Scotland Cup third round, kick-off 1.30pm, played to a finish.

GARTCOSH 3

MILTON 4

ALTHOUGH the scoreline makes this West of Scotland Cup tie a close match, Milton should have been out of sight by half-time.

Milton opened the scoring in the fifth minute when a tremendous long ball from McKinlay found Evans, he squared into the penalty box to find Gizzy who scored an excellent goal.

McMeechan was unlucky in the 20th minute as his shot was cleared off the line. Two minutes later the visitors were shocked when Gartcosh scored totally against the run of play.

But Milton soon took the lead in the 27th minute when Giannandrea met an Adamson free kick on the head, sent to down to Gizzy who scored number two.

Milton struck again in the 35th minute when Gizzy set up Giannandrea who finished well.

The game looked over in the 42nd minute when White hit the post, the ball fell to Gizzy who squared to Evans who blasted the ball into the net.

The second half was a bit of an anti-climax, but Milton still dominated the game. Both Gizzy and Giannandrea had good chances but it was Gartcosh who scored with an excellent goal from their striker.

Gartcosh got a third right on the full-time whistle when the referee awarded the home side a penalty kick.

This Saturday Milton are at home to Ashvale Victoria from the central league in the third round of the West of Scotland Cup, kick-off 1.30pm, penalties and extra time if required.
