Callander Thistle players gain recognition at awards night

CALLANDER Thistle held their Player of the Year Awards in the Riverside Inn last Saturday night.

A very successful season for Callander Thistle saw them score 117 goals in 37 competitive matches, they narrowly missed out on the League Cup Final, reached the last 16 of the Mathieson Trophy and the semi-final of the Colley Cup. But the main objective was promotion and this was achieved when they finished joint third in the league.

Sean Wilbert was top scorer with 22 goals; Most Man Of The Matches, awarded by the referee, was won jointly by David Herron and Kenny Ferguson; Goal of the Season went to Scott Graham against Bonnybridge; Alan Feaks won the Ewen MacGregor Memorial Award; Player of the Year was shared by Stuart Donaldson and David Varney, and Players Player of the Year was won by David Varney. Best team performance was the 4-3 victory in the quarter final of the JF Colley Cup.

During the day Callander Thistle staged a game where the current team played against a Select side made up of people from Callander to celebrate the Awards night. In a good spirited match Callander Thistle beat the Select side 6-4.

Callander: Varney, G Donaldson, Ferguson, Buchanan, Feaks, Wilbert, Loch, McWhirter, McLaren, Smith, Graham, Morrison, Nicol and T McLean.

Select side: Campbell, Blair, Forgrieve, Wardrobe, Fraser, Walker, Winter, Kinnaird, K.Feaks, Stevenson, MacGregor, Mercer and Ward. Callander would like to thank Paul Robertson who refereed the match.

Finally a big thanks to everyone in the community who have supported us throughout the season, especially Ammie Campbell and Tom Hardacre and all the staff of Riverside Inn.
