STIRLING Albion are on the verge of making Queen of the South midfielder Scott Robertson their second summer signing after last week’s capture of East Fife defender Greig McDonald.
Robertson has agreed to join the Binos and the deal should be completed by the early part of next week, with pre-season training due to resume on Tuesday.
The 21 year-old made 10 appearances for the Doonhamers in Division One last season and is well known to Albion assistant manager John O’Neill, who is a former team-mate of a player who has been at the Dumfries club for a number of years.
O’Neill said: “There are still a couple of things to sort out with the chairman so the deal isn’t done yet but Scott has agreed to come to the club and I’m delighted about that. He will give us something extra in midfield. He is over six feet tall and is a real athlete who I would also expect to get goals from the middle of the park.
“I’ve known him since he was 16 or 17 and I think he will prove a good signing. I would expect him to go straight into the team and the centre of midfield is his preferred position so he might be taking my place!
“I think we are putting together a good team but we are still maybe looking to add another central defender and possibly someone on the left of midfield to give us more options in these areas. We only really have Stewart Devine wide left in the middle and we could do with cover at the back should Greig McDonald or Sean Roycroft get injured.
“Nathan Taggart is ready to resume training with the rest of the guys and that is a big boost for us. I felt he was playing well when he got injured (in November) and he is someone who can operate on the right of midfield.
“We might have a look at a few players in training and the pre-season matches will also be useful for that while there is also the possibility of a loan deal or two as was the case last season,” added O’Neill, whose side will play Dunfermline (July 8), Partick Thistle (July 11) and Dundee United (July 18) in Forthbank friendlies before the home cup ties against Raith Rovers on July 25 and Ayr United the following weekend.
Albion will discover their Division Two schedule when the SFL fixture list is published at 10am today (Wednesday). Allan Moore’s men have often kicked off the campaign with a home game but were away to Brechin on day one last term and were unlucky to fall to a 2-1 defeat.
With Stenhousemuir, Airdrie, Clyde and Dumbarton all involved in Division Two in 2009/10, there will certainly be less travelling for the supporters. It is likely that the club’s derby match will remain as Alloa – fellow local rivals Stenhousemuir are set to be paired with Dumbarton.
