Rugby’s stars of tomorrow on show

THERE will be a feast of youth rugby at Bridgehaugh this coming weekend, writes Lorne Boswell.

The 1st XV will be away to Lenzie to play their re-arranged Scottish Hydro Electricity cup-stie – see Friday’s edition for the latest team news.

However, at home on Sunday, both the U16s and the U15s will be playing their respective National Age Group semi finals. Given the change in the weather, the club is optimistic these games will go on.

The Under 15s will kick off against Boroughmuir first at 11am. The winner of this tie will meet the winner of Ayr vs Glasgow Hawks in the final.

The 15s, coached by ex-1st XV star Eric Urquhart, are developing a reputation of having a very mean defence. In five games so far in the Caley League, County have only conceded one try.

Boroughmuir RFC is currently producing some very good youth teams and is committed to playing a positive and attractive style of rugby. Boroughmuir has only lost once in their league this season and this game should be an absolute cracker.

The Under 16s take on Musselburgh in their semi final, kicking off at 1.30pm. Musselburgh is another club who deserves the good reputation for its youth section.

Musselburgh players have lost only once in their league so far although their league position is deceptive as they have two to three games in hand on the clubs above them.

The winner of this tie will face Boroughmuir or Dumfries in the final. The County U-16s are looking to repeat their feat of last season when they won the National U-15 competition.

The U-15 and U-16 finals are both due to be played at Murrayfield on March 29 and, as in previous years, County hope to be well represented come the day.

County’s under 18s are already through to their final (scheduled for the weekend of the City of Stirling Sevens on April 25) and everyone at the club will be hoping the 15s and 16s can get through too.

In addition, the Scottish U-17 Inter-District championship is due to be played at Bridgehaugh under lights on February 25 and March 4 – two successive Wednesdays. County will be represented in the Caley team.

If you want to see the stars of tomorrow, you know where to go!
