Stirling women rugby players win league

A COMBINED rugby team made up of Stirling County and Stirling University’s women won the National Development League in their first season.

Their final games took place on Sunday in Mossfield Park, Oban.

The afternoon started with a game of sevens with Stirling taking on Strathaven winning by a comfortable 55-5. Then it was all down to points in a twelve a side game between Stirling and Oban Lorne to see who would win the league.

The two teams played vigorously with Oban scoring the first try but then Stirling hit back scoring two trys both by Emily Johnson and converted by Natalia Macholla. Stirling won with a final score of 14-5.

The National Development League is open to all teams who are not competing in either the Scottish Women’s Rugby Union Premier or National Leagues.

Throughout the season Stirling saw two players, Natalia Macholla and Sarah Dixon, progress into Scotland Women’s International squad. Macholla only adopted rugby as a new sport at the beginning of the season last year. She joined the Scotland squad in time to play for this years six nations.

Stirling Women’s RFC is grateful for the continued support and sponsorship from Outback, Upper Craig’s, Stirling.

Training nights are Monday and Friday 7-8.30pm at Stirling County RFC, Bridgehaugh.
